Dovetail Joints look cool and add an element of detail and elegance to wood projects like drawers, boxes, cabinetry and more. Traditionally they have been made by hand which is time-consuming for some woodworkers, therapeutic and rewarding for others and frustratingly difficult for many. Many, many years ago became somewhat efficient at making them, but when you don't practice periodically, you almost need to start all over again.

The global pandemic of Covid-19 virus has affected everyone on the planet, and while we practice isolation and social distancing during this time, we also look for things to help occupy our time and allow us to be productive too. What a great time to think about, and maybe even try wood carving. It's fairly inexpensive to get into, you can purchase much of your tools and wood on-line and there are a variety of internet carving resources to give you ideas and help. 

I would venture a guess that wood carving is probably the earliest form of woodworking, and for you and me, it may have been your earliest form as well. If you are like me, and received your first jackknife as a youngster, and were told: "it's very sharpe, be very careful with it" ... but sure enough, didn't many of us cut ourselves ... I still remember that foray into "whittling" and how my mother came to my rescue with a bandaid ....

Workshops are full of potential accidents, many of them happen because we, as woodworkers may be trying to rush through one particular job or build, but some accidents happen through pure innocence, where the woodworker is doing something but is not aware of the potential problems that could arise. I have had a few of those over the years and it has taught me lessons without the distress of injury.

Sometimes people come up with ideas and little inventions or even re-inventions, that on the outside look like they are good when in fact they have the potential for accidents and sometimes serious one, that is why when I go through these I like to try and explain what can go wrong because that way it educates for future processes and what to look for ... 

Woodworking with Thin Plywood, like Baltic Birch Plywoods

The first time I ever purchased "door skin plywood" was at a lumber store, probably 30 years ago. I was recommended to me for what I  was building at the time, and in that period, the material came in door-size sheets. Now when I purchase it, it comes in 4 x 8 foot sheets, which gives much more material, and each sheet of plywood is still very reasonably priced.

One of my main reasons for wanting the plywood right now is to try to make my small workshop more efficient by making some wooden trays that are the correct size for the drawers and for what I want to put in them to help economize my space ....
