I am always amazed at all the different kinds of clamps there are and now combinations of them can do so much. For me, my old style bar clamps are among my most used and they show it. They work well but dripping glue from joints that falls on the clamps makes them hard to use.

This is even more frustrating when you are doing glue ups and you already have limited time before the glue starts to set and harden. It's always best to take some time in the workshop to do some tune-ups to the tools and this is one easy one that can save you some frustrations later on ...
Getting More from Your Router Bits

I love it when manufacturers can slightly modify their tool parts in such a way that the tools can do so much more for you. Some of the Wood Router Bit manufacturers do that with some of their Router Bits. I do not have a list of those who do, but it is a feature they would want buyers of their products to know, so it won't take much work to see if your bit supplier is one of those who does this.

I have been using Freud Router Bits for a very long time and am aware that during the manufacture, some of the bits they sell can make a variety of cuts so that you can get more profile options than just the one thing you may have purchased the bit for in the first place. I have long wanted to make some samples of what my bits can do so I can compare an choose which one I want to use, so this was a good time for me to do that ...

One of the challenges for most of us is keeping out tools in nice shape, and among other things, that means rust free. Where I live in the more temperate climates there are seasonal and daily fluctuations in temperature and both of these, combined with the moisture in the air, are big contributors to making our tools rusting.

Just knowing, and understanding the elements that come together to create rust are a big first step in helping us preventing rust from happening. The cause, of course, is moisture that comes in contact with bare steel and the reaction of the 2 elements is what we call rust, which is basically a corrosion that happens when the 2 come in contact with one another, but what are causes of those contacts?

It's nice once in a while to get away from the square designs we so often make in woodworking, with something a bit softer, like circle and ovals, Recently one of my subscribers "Phil" asked if there was an easy way of making ovals. He didn't say what he needed them for, but I thought this would be a good time to show one way of making ovals that I have used in the past ... many, many years ago.

What's nice about this jig is that you can adjust how you want the ovals to look, do you want them almost round looking or do you want them much taller than they are wide? All these things can be done by making adjustments to the jig or the re-sizing the jig it'self.

Today I was in the middle of another project when I realized that I had just used at least 3 little workshop tricks that I should share with everyone so rather than write them down and do them later, best I do them right now while I still have the machines at still somewhat set up for them.

The first 2 are on the drill press ... you could use a corded or cordless drill for the same, but if you have a drill press, this hack is better done with a bit more control on a drill press ...

I wonder if the person who invented the first working wood router, really knew what kind of a versatile tool he was opening up the world to? There have been so many different add-ons, attachments, jigs and bits, not to mention the variety of routers, their features and how they work, the whole thing can be quite daunting for newcomers to woodworking. What's nice about wood routers is you can make things as simple or as complicated as you want to get but everything still comes back to basics which includes the most used router bits.

My first router was single speed, half horsepower with a fixed base and took only 1/4" router bits. I still have some of those bit and they were very rudimentary but even then I thought this was an amazing tool and the reason I purchased it was because I could use a round over bit in it and save myself some time while making a better job ...
