CA Glues have become a mainstay in woodworking because of their fast curing times. In many cases a ca glue can act like a third-hand to woodworker assembling more difficult projects. For others, just the fast, strong abilities of the glue are enough to warrant keeping a steady supply in the workshop at all times.
Along with CA glues, are the 5 Minute Epoxy glues that allow for a strong quick bond as well, but with a bit more "open time" for the glue so the woodworker can make small adjustments if needed ...
I have been using this "Door Skin" plywood, which is actually a bit more than 1/16 in thickness, for several years. The term Door Skin comes from the fact that the plywood is what is used to "skin" interior doors of houses. It's quite reasonably priced and easy to cut, even with a utility knife and easy to work with. I make custom sized storage boxes for all sorts of things in my workshop and they are strong boxes too. CA glue is the perfect glue for making these, strong, fast curing and easy to work with.
Yeah I know they don't make the pretties box, but for utility box they are strong light and fun to make.
With the new Accelerator with the brush applicator, it makes box making even easier and more precise, and it even comes with a spare brush.
Moving along to the 2 part epoxy glue, Starbond has really "nailed" this product in terms of convenience. They are shipped with the small plastic tray for mixing, along with a silicon stir/mix stick, and the best part the tops screw on and off, not pull off like most others which makes these much easier to get on and off and sit more securely which undoubtedly will help add shelf life to the product.
I use epoxy glues when I need bit more open time than CA glues give, and the thicker glue is sometimes and advantage too.
Epoxy putties are not new but this product is new to Starbond and will fill a need that woodworkers have sought for some time. Especially useful for people trying to preserve as much wood as they can by filling crack, checks and defects in wood rather than opting other less desirable options. This Epoxy works well, is very strong, but sands, planes and easily cut with most saw blades. A welcome addition to the shop.
Below is the sample I made using the epoxy putty. The crack was quite wide and went through the board so trying to fill a crack like this would be futile with any other liquid type product as it would run right through, using tape can work in some instances but this putting is foolproof solution and has many, many other uses.
My latest foray is into the world of mixing CA Glue colors for furniture and wood repairs. Starbond brown glues come in a couple of different brown tones and consistencies and when mixed with a bit of clear ca glue, they can be used quite accurately blend damaged wood and disguise it to be less obvious. Like many custom colors, testing is required, but erring on the side of darker than lighter tones will solve many problems very quickly.
Lot of cool things from Starbond.com, I always look forward to see what new ideas they will be coming up with next.
