TOPIC: Buying a fixed-depth router.

Buying a fixed-depth router. 9 years 10 months ago #269

Howdy, all!

I've got a plunge-router mounted under one side of my table saw, and it's a huge chore to use. It's the only router I've got, though, and most of the routing I do doesn't involve any free-hand work, so this has been tolerable up to this point...but now I'm finally going to get a second router. A non-plunge (is "fixed-depth" the correct term?) router. And so I turn to you. I had occasion to use a Porter Cable router at a wood shop hear here, and it was in a mount that allowed you to simply twist the router to adjust the depth. I really liked that, but, unfortunately, I think it's out of my price range. I can afford $100-150 US. The local Menard's doesn't have a single fixed-depth router, for some reason. So, any thoughts?

Hi Brian,
I have a Porter-Cable 690LR 1-3/4 HP Router for $139.99 You can find it at www.newsouthernwoodshoppe.com/porter_cable.htm scroll down to the bottom of the page. I do belive that you can get free deliver on this item. I hope this helps you in your search for a fixed base router.

Thanks for the speedy reply, Rick. I've been leaning towards Porter-Cable, because A) I had good experience with one; and B) when I looked them up afterwards they had good ratings, so hopefully $139-ish will stay within my budget...getting a drill press in a couple of days, too (before (or dare I hope at the same time as?) the router).

I'll second the recommendation for the P-C. If you could possibly stretch to the variable speed version, the 690 LRVS you'd find the variable speed feature very useful as it allows you to use large diameter bits, like panel raisers, which can't be used at the fixed (highe) speed.

Okay, I can see that the "VS" in 690LRVS is for "Variable Speed", but what's "LR" stand for? I looked on the P-C site...nothing.

Hi Brian,
The LR stands for Lever release. If you want to go for variable speed and are looking too spend a little more I would consider the 3 1/4 pc model 7518 it will handle larger router bits an give you the power you need. right now they are at the lowest price that I have ever seen them. $ 289.99. just something to give you to think about.
