Colin replied to the topic 'Freud dado on Porter Cable saw' in the forum.Glad to hear you resolved the issue. The Freud dado set you have is a quality item, but in terms of Freud dado sets, Freud also make 2 other dado sets that cost more, have more teeth so the bottoms of the dado cuts are a bit smoother.
I never really cared what the bottom of by dado looked like, so I have the same set as you and it works just fine

Colin replied to the topic 'Router Fence Question' in the forum. You might be new to woodworking, but it appears that you have good problem solving skills so you will do well as a woodworker
Split fences or sub fences as you call them often are mis-aligned, including mine.
To fix this you can either shim them or adapt or replace them with a solid fence, and I have done both ... for different reasons.
Most of the the time I am using the spit fence which is now shimmed, but I also have a larger, extruded plastic fence I can use if I need it.
Hope this help ...

Colin replied to the topic 'table saw blades' in the forum.Hi Markv, the problem you are encountering is related to the saw not the saw blade you have selected. The Ryobi saw you have is what is called a direct drive saw. This means that the arbor of the saw, that's the big bolt where you mount the blades to the saw, is actually part of the motor. There are advantages and disadvantages with this design, the main disadvantage is that you can't crank the saw blade up as high as you can on other saws that are have their arbors drive by a pulley system.
In some instances you can overcome this shortcoming by ripping one side or a board half way through, then flip the board over end over end, so the same side of the board is against the fence, then cut the other side of the board.

Excellent ... you will never regret buying quality tools.
Looking forward to hearing what you are going to do for a work bench. I too am in need of a new bench so I'm looking at different designs and ideas ... let me know what you settle on

Colin replied to the topic 'Purchusing A New Table Saw' in the forum.Sounds like the new saw was everything you hoped for ... too bad the drill press didn't work out, but at least now you know. I have heard very mixed reviews on HF tools, but you would hope that a tool that is lightly used might be an ok purchase, but not in this case.
Keep us updated on the saw as you continue to use it ...

Colin replied to the topic 'walnut countertop' in the forum.Hey Rusty, yes at 30 inches wide there is a good chance for wood movement to happen. What we try to do on the ends of boards this wide (like with table tops) are to use mechanical fastners on the underside. I this case using the wood strip but instead of gluing it, I would try to fasten it with slotted holes and wide head screws (such as Kreg screws) so that as the wood moves the screws can slide a bit in the slot.
Since I can't see exactly what you have, nor I know the situation you are working with this is the best I can think of.
Maybe some of out other experienced woodworkers have some ideas ??

Colin replied to the topic 'Finish for an oak toy box' in the forum.I agree with Glen, even if it is off a wee bit, I think it looks great and it is going to give years and years of great service, and when it is outgrown as a toy box it will be re-purposed as a box for something else.
Great job ... we look forward to seeing more
